Quick response to Edward Tuddenham's comments below...
- "Presumably it is the wild life aspect of the meadow that concerns the
users of this list rather than any possible social implications".
Many folk who follow this list will not want to separate the social from the
wildlife dimensions of the issue of the threat to this meadow, which is the
main outside play resource for Knowles Tooth.
To reiterate...for Knowles Tooth's visiting children - many of whom have
suffered trauma and poverty - the possibility of free play in nature is part
of what real freedom means. We all need access to nature, but these deprived
children need it more than most...
- "Does the meadow have designated nature conservation status?"
It is not an SSSI, Edward, which is the only designation which could provide
legal protection. It would not qualify, either, on size and other grounds.
Many surviving archaic meadows aren't even SNCIs...indeed are wholly
off-radar to the conservation institutions. The SBRC does know about this
meadow cos I told them about it some 12 years ago. I have no idea whether
WSCC have designated it an SNCI. They certainly hadn't up till last year.
Not that it would make a blind bit of difference if they did, against a
destructive owner...and many SNCIs and candidate SNCIs are continuing to
decline, or suffer erosion...or outright destruction.
I have looked at two Surrey candidate SNCIs in the last week which have been
wholly destroyed.
What WILL make a difference is if the Bishop and the church charity hear a
strong voice from us folk for the Knowles Tooth Childrens Centre to be saved
from closure...

Presumably it is the wild life aspect of the meadow that concerns the
users
of this list rather than any possible social implications.
Does the meadow have designated nature conservation status? If so then the
new owner has to look after the meadow properly. If not can we get it
designated? If so for which features? No mention is made of fungi. Often
autumn brings up wax caps which can be used as an indicator of grassland
diversity.
Tony Greenstein thinks that the church of the 1833 poor law has not
changed.
Some may think the 1833 poor law should be reinstated but that is not the
issue for the wildlife trust, it is whether the meadow should and can be
protected by legislation. Otherwise the land can and will be sold off by
the
church to the highest bidder who will do what they like with it.
