Hello all,
I don't do this often but I could use some help if anyone is able.
Attached are two photos of a caterpillar we found on our last Sussex Moth
Group outing, while waiting for dark beating bushes. This guy came out of
a crab apple tree. He is very distinctive and I have exhausted my resources
I have here and can't find a match. He is at about 1" right now.
Any help or 'have a look here's welcome.

Thanks for looking
Crystal

Hi Crystal,

We've gone though Porter's Caterpillars of the British Isles, but to no
avail I'm afraid! We'll be interested to hear what it grows up to be.
Maybe as the caterpillar matures it will change in colour...keep us
posted!

All the best, Penny

Hi Penny,
Thank you, I've been looking for a affordable copy of Porters to check
haha, It is not easy to get malus for me to feed, I have some atm so
hopefully it will decide to 'change' soon to something recognisable! The
meadow it was found in, we are trying to keep a good record of species in,
and I will be very happy to find out what this is.

Thanks for trying!!
Crystal

I wonder if it might be a light crimson underwing, Catocala promissa, or
another species of Catocala.

It seems to be the right shape and similar to one of the caterpillar photos
on this page:

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the response, yes I did wonder about this species, although our
native ones tend to be Oak eaters, but maybe can tolerate apple? I'll try
some oak as it would sure be easier to rear it on if so.
I had a long dig through UKLeps and Lepiforum.de the other night, the other
similar species are some of the hook-tips...*Sigh*...lol

Hello,
I know that since I sent out that caterpillar photo a few days back that
you all are awake nights to know what it is :) Ok ok maybe not, well just
incase anyone is interested, it would appear that the first photos it had
probably just come into that instar, it has plumped up now as I found some
one with apple in the yard and it is eating well. It is *drum roll*
Green-brindled Crescent Moth Caterpillar, and I have to say that the photos
I found on local online resources didn't look anywhere as lovely as this
guy does.
New photos attached and thank you so much for those of you who had a guess
or a look for me!

Crystal
