Subject: Updates for natural history groups - funding opportunity and more!
Updates in this e-newsletter:
? Nature Groups Near You
? ARKive - Bringing Nature into Focus
? Defra funding for biological recording
? OPAL-UK - new Lottery funding
Nature Groups Near You
This growing resource now has around 40 groups represented, but we want to see many more on there! It's a great opportunity to advertise your natural history society or recording scheme and attract new members. Groups can add their own profile and control the content, so please visit www.nhm.ac.uk/naturegroups to join.
ARKive - Bringing Nature into Focus
The Natural History Museum has been working with ARKive, advising on its Heritage Lottery Funded project 'Bringing Nature into Focus'. Through this project, ARKive will create a new UK section on their current site www.arkive.org which will provide an encyclopaedia of UK species and habitat profiles with high quality photos and films. It will allow people to upload their own media, interact and share comments, find resources from other organisations and search a map of conservation events and volunteering opportunities near to them, provided by organisations such as yours.
The Bringing Nature into Focus webpages will link to the Nature Groups Near You directory of natural history schemes and societies. ARKive are keen that the new resource is a useful portal, linking to existing content where it already exists, and filling the gaps. They want to gain a better understanding of your needs so they can design the site with these in mind, so are asking you to spare a couple of minutes to complete a short online questionnaire. ARKive are offering a goody bag as a prize for responses received by 13th December - a great chance to win some amazing wildlife prizes that might serve as handy Christmas presents for the nature-lovers in your life! The survey can be found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ARKiveUK
Defra funding for Biological Recording
The Defra fund for biodiversity recording in the voluntary sector is a funding programme established to deliver part of the published government commitment in the Natural Environment White Paper to support the voluntary sector's role in engaging with the natural environment and contributing to our understanding of its state and trends. It may provide a source of funding for both local and national schemes and societies as well as Local records centres.
The capital scheme will offer small amounts of funding (up to ?5,000) that will deliver one or more of the objectives below by March 2014.
? Objective 1 - Improvements to data capture
? Objective 2 - Improvements to data management
? Objective 3 - Improvements to data use
? Objective 4 - Support for structured surveillance
o a) Capacity building through provision of recording equipment
b) Capacity building through training on structured surveillance methodologies
The closing date for all bids is midnight on 16th December 2013. Full details can be found here <http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/ourwork/conservation/biodiversity/funding/defrafundcapitalscheme.aspx>
OPAL-UK - new Lottery funding
As the Big Lottery Funded phase of OPAL comes to a close, I am pleased to announce that the project has secured funding from a different Lottery scheme to expand its work into Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So keep an eye on the OPAL website www.OPALexplorenature.org as this next phase of the project takes shape.
I hope you've found the information in this e-newsletter useful. If you'd rather not receive these in future, simply reply to let me know and I will remove you from the mailing list.
